Hair Growth: The Honest Guide
Hair grows about a centimetre a month, and no product changes that much. The honest path to longer, thicker-looking hair is protecting the length you grow — and treating real causes when growth stalls.
Search "how to grow hair faster" and you will find thousands of videos promising inches in weeks, usually while selling a serum. None of them can deliver, because hair growth speed is set by biology: each follicle produces hair at roughly 1 to 1.5 centimetres per month, and no cosmetic product rewrites that rate. What you can control is far more powerful than most people realise: how much of the length you grow actually survives. Most people who think their hair "won't grow" are actually losing length to breakage faster than they grow it. Fix the breakage, fix the deficiencies, treat medical causes — and hair gets longer, fuller, and healthier on its own schedule.
How hair growth actually works
Each hair lives through a cycle: a growth phase (anagen) lasting 2–7 years, a short transition phase (catagen), and a resting phase (telogen) that ends in shedding. At any time, 85–90% of scalp hair is growing. The length you can reach depends mostly on how long your anagen phase lasts — which is genetic. That is why some people reach waist length easily and others plateau at shoulder length no matter what they do. It is not a failure of effort; it is biology. The goal is to reach your own maximum, not someone else's.
Growth can slow or stall for real reasons: crash dieting, iron or vitamin D deficiency, thyroid disorders, major stress or illness (telogen effluvium), hormonal conditions, and harsh damage. If your hair suddenly stopped growing, thinned noticeably, or started shedding heavily, that is a medical question — a doctor or dermatologist can find the cause with a history and blood tests.
What genuinely helps hair grow longer and fuller
1. Stop losing length to breakage
This is the biggest lever for most people, and it costs almost nothing:
- Condition every wash. Conditioner on mid-lengths and ends reduces friction and breakage. This alone can transform retained length over months.
- Detangle gently. Wide-tooth comb, damp hair, ends upward, never ripping. Detangling is where most breakage happens.
- Limit heat and bleach. Both weaken the shaft. Air-dry when you can, use heat protectant when you cannot, and space out chemical treatments.
- Protect at night. A loose braid or a satin pillowcase reduces friction while you sleep.
- Trim split ends. Trimming does not make hair grow faster — but split ends travel up the shaft and snap hair off. A small trim every 8–12 weeks preserves length.
2. Eat enough
Hair is protein, and follicles are fast-growing cells that notice under-eating quickly. Crash diets are a classic cause of shedding 2–3 months later. Eat adequately: protein at each meal, iron-rich foods, vegetables, and enough calories overall. If you suspect a deficiency, get a blood test through a doctor before supplementing — megadoses of biotin do not grow hair and can interfere with lab tests.
3. Treat real hair loss with proven treatments
If the issue is pattern hair loss (thinning at the temples, crown, or a widening part), cosmetic products will not fix it. The proven options are topical minoxidil and, for men by prescription, oral finasteride — both need months of consistent use and a doctor's guidance on suitability and side effects. A dermatologist can also discuss PRP or transplant for suitable candidates. Anything else claiming regrowth should be treated as marketing until it shows medicine-grade evidence.
4. Scalp care (modest, real benefits)
A clean, calm scalp grows hair better than an irritated one. Wash when the scalp needs it, treat dandruff (a medicated anti-dandruff shampoo used as directed helps), and skip harsh scrubs and heavy buildup. Gentle scalp massage feels good and may modestly improve blood flow — it is a pleasant habit, not a growth treatment, and that is fine.
What does not grow hair
- "Grow 3 inches in a month" serums and oils. No cosmetic product changes the growth rate. Oils condition and reduce breakage, which is useful — but they do not speed growth.
- Rice water, onion juice, garlic, and kitchen remedies. Weak or no evidence for growth. Some can irritate the scalp. Gentle care beats folklore.
- Frequent trims to "stimulate" growth. Cutting the ends does not affect the follicle. Trims preserve length by removing split ends — that is their real job.
- Biotin gummies for everyone. Biotin helps only if you are deficient, which is uncommon. The rest is expensive urine and a risk to lab test accuracy.
- Brushing 100 strokes a day. Excessive brushing breaks hair. Gentle detangling is enough.
- Steroids or unregulated drugs. Dangerous, and steroids can accelerate hair loss. Never use them.
A realistic timeline
Month 1: less breakage, smoother ends, calmer scalp. Months 2–3: noticeably less shedding from breakage, hair feeling thicker at the ends. Months 4–6: visible length gain (roughly 4–9 cm of growth, minus breakage). Months 6–12: the real verdict — compare photos taken in the same light, same hairstyle. If you have pattern hair loss on proven treatment, judge at 6–12 months, not 6 weeks. Hair rewards patience the way few things do: the people with the longest, healthiest hair are usually the ones who did the boring things for a year.

How fast does hair grow?
Scalp hair grows about 1 to 1.5 centimetres per month, roughly half an inch. No product can make it grow dramatically faster; the honest goal is to protect the length you grow.
Can I make my hair grow faster?
You cannot meaningfully speed up the growth rate. You can maximise retained length by reducing breakage, eating adequately, fixing deficiencies, and treating medical hair loss with proven treatments.
Does cutting hair make it grow faster?
No. Trimming does not change the growth rate at the follicle. Regular trims remove split ends, which prevents breakage travelling up the shaft — so hair looks fuller and retains length better.
Do hair growth serums work?
Most cosmetic serums do not regrow hair. The exception is minoxidil, a proven treatment for pattern hair loss that needs months of consistent use and a doctor's guidance.
