Double Cleansing

Double cleansing is washing your face twice in the evening: an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve sunscreen and sebum, then a water-based cleanser to remove what is left. It is the foundation step of Korean skincare — and it suits many men who wear sunscreen daily.
What is double cleansing?
Double cleansing is a two-step evening cleansing method. Step one uses an oil-based cleanser, balm, or micellar water to dissolve oil-based buildup — sunscreen, sebum, pollution. Step two uses a water-based cleanser to remove sweat, dirt, and residue. The two steps remove different kinds of buildup, which one wash often leaves behind.
How to double cleanse
- Step 1 — oil-based cleanser. On dry skin, massage an oil cleanser or balm over the face for 30–60 seconds. This dissolves sunscreen, sebum, and pollution. Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Step 2 — water-based cleanser. On damp skin, massage a gentle gel or foam cleanser, then rinse thoroughly. This removes sweat, dirt, and what is left of step one.
- Pat dry. Use a clean towel and pat — do not rub. Follow with toner and moisturiser while skin is still slightly damp.
Evening only. Morning skin needs one gentle cleanse, not two.
Who double cleansing helps
- Sunscreen wearers. Sunscreen is designed to stay on skin, which is exactly why one wash often leaves residue behind.
- Oily or combination skin. Two gentle cleanses remove excess sebum without the stripping of one harsh cleanser.
- City pollution and heavy sweating. Days with pollution, dust, or long workouts leave more to remove.
Who should skip it or soften it
Dry or sensitive skin may do better with one gentle cleanse. If skin feels tight, dry, or stripped after the second step, drop to one cleanse or alternate evenings. Irritated or broken skin needs gentle care — keep the routine minimal and see a dermatologist if irritation persists. Double cleansing is a cleansing method, not a treatment: it will not clear acne on its own, but clean skin helps everything else work.
Common mistakes
- Water too hot. Hot water strips the barrier. Lukewarm is right.
- Scrubbing. Massage gently. Scrubbing irritates skin and spreads breakouts.
- Two harsh cleansers. Both steps should be gentle. Harsh plus harsh is worse than one harsh wash.
- Double cleansing morning and night. Twice a day is more than most skin needs. Evening only.
- Expecting it to treat acne alone. Cleansing removes buildup. Treating persistent acne needs the full routine — and sometimes a dermatologist.

What is double cleansing?
A two-step evening method: oil-based cleanser first to dissolve sunscreen, sebum, and pollution, then water-based cleanser to remove sweat, dirt, and residue.
Should I double cleanse every day?
Once a day in the evening is enough for most people who wear sunscreen or spend time outdoors. If your skin feels dry, alternate evenings or drop to one cleanse.
Do I need to double cleanse in the morning?
No. Morning skin needs one gentle cleanse. Double cleansing is for removing the day.
Is double cleansing good for oily skin?
Often yes. Two gentle cleanses remove excess sebum without the stripping of one harsh cleanser. If skin feels tight afterward, the cleansers are too strong.
Can double cleansing dry out skin?
It can, if the cleansers are harsh or the water is hot. Use gentle formulas, lukewarm water, and moisturiser right after. Dry or sensitive skin may do better with one cleanse.
